The poem has been
praised for its non-stereotypical depiction of an Arab. The main theme of
the poem Abou Ben Adhem by James Henry Leigh Hunt is the importance of
love for mankind. The poem tells the
story of a devout Muslim who learns that true piety is not just about following
religious rituals and worshiping God, but it is also about showing compassion
towards others. The poet believes
that God loves those who love His creation.

Stanza
1: Abou Ben Adhem………………. writing in a book of gold.
Reference: The
above stanza is taken from the poem " Abou ben Adhem". This
poem is written by an English poet James Henry Leigh Hunt.
Context: Abou
Ben Adhem awoke from deep sleep. Abou Ben Adhem saw an angel in the room when
he awoke from deep sleep. There was moonlight and peace in his room. An angel
was writing something in a book of gold.
Stanza
2: Exceeding peace………… who love the Lord
Context: In the presence of the angel Abou became bold. He knew
that he was a peace-loving and courageous figure. He inquired from the angel
about his writing in the book of gold on which the angel replied that it was
writing the names of those who love God.
Stanza 3: “And is mine
one?”............ that loves his fellow men.
Context: In these lines, the poet explains the
dismal for Abou that his name was not in the list. On this refusal, Abou
cheerily requested the angel to write his name in the list of lovers of
mankind.
Stanza 4: The angel wrote…………..name led all
the rest.
Context: These lines describe that the angel wrote
something in the book of gold and vanished that day. The next night, the angel
appeared again with the book and showed Abou that his name was on the top of
the list.
